Analysts: Choice of Hamáček indicates no big change of ČSSD

The fresh election of Jan Hamacek as the Czech Social Democrat (CSSD) head indicates no radical change of the party, according to experts CTK addressed on Monday, some of whom praised the CSSD's plan to launch government-forming talks with ANO, while others called it unfortunate.

Social Democrats pick leader, bring viable gov't closer

The Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) picked former parliament speaker Jan Hamáček as their chairman on Sunday, bringing closer a possible breakthrough in forming a viable government. Hamáček, whose Social Democrats ruled in coalition with ANO and the Christian Democrats from January 2014 until last December, won 272 votes at the ČSSD congress, beating former regional gov't chief Jan Zimola, who got 224 votes.

Čuba resigns from senator's mandate after 18-month absence

Frantisek Cuba, 82, will resign from the post of Czech senator at the end of February, following his 18-month absence from the Senate due to health problems, he announced in a written statement that senator Ivo Valenta (for Entrepreneurs' Party) read in the Senate on Thursday.

STAN ready to discuss support for next gov't

The Mayors and Independents (STAN) may negotiate with the ANO movement about possible support for the next government in order to prevent the extremist Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) and Communists (KSČM) from taking part in power, the STAN national committee decided on Thursday. Party head Petr Gazdík said among the main conditions are the pro-Western focus of the country and no participation of prosecuted politicians in the cabinet.

PM: Slovak court ruling on StB not to affect gov't talks

Czech PM in resignation Andrej Babiš does not expect the Slovak court's verdict on his registration in the files of the Communist secret police (StB) as its agent to complicate talks on the formation of his second government, he said after the cabinet' meeting on Wednesday. He repeated that he would defend himself against the registration in the StB file by legal means. "This is no issue to me. I do not consider this a complication," he said.
